Studying mothers' lived experience of the consequences of their daughters’ educational migration
English Abstract: Migration can significantly impact the physical, psychological and emotional health and well-being of migrants and the individuals remaining in the country of origin, particularly parents. In this regard, the present study aims to investigate mothers' lived experience of their daughters’ educational migration to European countries. This qualitative study is based on an interpretative phenomenological approach. The research was conducted through the purposive sampling of mothers aged 50 to 70 residing in the city of Mashhad during the years 2021-2022. They had at least two children, one of whom was a daughter who had migrated to European countries for education. Following 15 in-depth semi-structured interviews with those mothers, the researcher reached data saturation. The interviews were analyzed using Smith's phenomenological method, and a total of 537 initial codes, 199 initial concepts, 15 sub-themes, and 5 main themes were identified. The themes included Existential-Cognitive Crisis Experience, Emotional and Affective Distress, Cognitive Distress, Behavioral Distress and Dysregulation, and Adaptation and Acceptance of Conditions. The research provides insights into mothers' lived experience of their children's migration, and the findings can be valuable for the professionals working in the fields of mental health and elderly care services as well as social workers and psychologists, helping them implement their programs more successfully.
