Cultural Centers and the Third Place: Understanding the Process of Blurring the Women's Boundaries in Public Spaces
English Abstract: Spaces play a critical role in shaping social relationships, and the interaction between society and space can help diminish or eliminate the interactive limitations imposed on women. The concept of the third place was first introduced by Oldenburg and has since been widely discussed in global academic discourse. The aim of this study is to understand the processes through which cultural centers, as third places, may contribute to reshaping the social worlds of women. The study population consisted of women present in cultural centers across Tehran, selected through purposive and theoretical sampling, with a final sample size of 15 participants. The research followed a qualitative methodology using the grounded theory approach. The core category identified in this study is the creation of a semiotic space of resistance, formed through causal processes such as generational gaps, social connections, and distinct worldviews within these third places. Despite restrictive disciplinary conditions in broader public spaces, women in this study engaged in spatial appropriation and resistance.
