Interpretive analysis of the prediction of the coming of punishment on the people of Yunus (verse 98 of Surah Yunus)
English Abstract: Verse 98 of Surah Yunus has been interpreted through three distinct perspectives in exegetical literature, reflecting the intellectual foundations of commentators. One perspective refers to the prevention of divine punishment before its descent or prior to the appearance of its signs, which could support the occurrence of bada' (divine change in decree). The other two perspectives explain the prevention of punishment after its descent or after people observe its signs. The term "bada'" is not explicitly mentioned in commentaries on this verse, except in a few exegetical works such as al-Ayyashi's commentary. The necessity of examining this issue stems from the fact that bada' is among key discussions in understanding the relationship between divine knowledge and God's legislative and creative will. This relationship impacts the worldview of Muslims. This research employs a descriptive-analytical method with a comparative methodology to analyze different interpretations. The study examines the possibility of applying the concept of bada' to this verse. Research findings, based on the context of verses and analysis of the word "kashafna" (We removed), confirm the view of preventing punishment before its descent or the appearance of its signs. This constitutes an instance of divine bada'. This finding aligns with the narration from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): God did not exercise bada' in anything except that it was in His knowledge before it appeared to Him.
