A Critical Examination of Gender Equality Strategies in Islamic Thought
English Abstract: Abstract Abstract This study aims to elucidate the fundamental distinctions between "gender equality" (absolute legal and social equity) and "Islamic gender justice" (rights proportionate to inherent desert). Through a thematic analysis and critical examination of 30 authoritative international sources, ten key gender equality strategies were identified and evaluated across three dimensions: At the foundational level, the clash between the Islamic worldview and the feminist paradigm was analyzed through two axes: 1) Theological differences (divine legislative guardianship vs. immanent theology); 2) Anthropological distinctions (emphasis on innate human nature vs. social constructivism). At the formal level, only six strategies (e.g., rule of law and combating violence) were deemed compatible with Islamic principles after conceptual modifications. The remaining four strategies (including recognition of sexual minorities) were found inherently incompatible with Sharia norms. Content-level findings revealed substantive divergences in interpreting concepts like "cultural reforms" and "equitable distribution." For instance, while feminist discourse frames cultural reform as erasing gender stereotypes, the Islamic paradigm redefines it as reinforcing innate gender roles. The study proposes a model of "desert-based gender justice" aligned with Islamic principles while addressing contemporary societal needs. Its key contribution is a three-tiered evaluative framework for gender policies, offering a foundation for context-sensitive development planning in Muslim-majority societies.
