How do character strengths foster the subjective well-being of married individuals? The mediating role of marital intimacy and family cohesion
English Abstract: The subjective well-being of each married individual provides the foundation for personal growth and flourishing, as well as for enhancing relationship quality. Identifying the factors that contribute to married adults’ well-being is therefore of particular importance. Drawing on Seligman’s theory of character strengths and well-being, this study examined how character strengths relate to subjective well-being through the chain-mediating effects of marital intimacy and family cohesion. The research population comprised married men and women aged 20 to 40 living in Kashan, Iran, in 2023. A total of 384 participants were recruited via convenience sampling and completed Peterson and Seligman’s Brief Strengths Test (BST), the Walker and Thompson Intimacy Scale (IS), Fisher’s Family Cohesion Scale (FOCS), and the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling in AMOS-24. The results indicated that the proposed model had a satisfactory fit. The direct effect of character strengths on subjective well-being was significant (β = 0.534, p < .001), and the chain-mediating effects of marital intimacy and family cohesion were also significant (β = 0.151, p < .01). Accordingly, fostering character strengths may enhance marital intimacy, strengthen family cohesion, and ultimately promote married individuals’ subjective well-being. These findings highlight the importance for counselors and psychotherapists of attending to character strengths as a pathway for improving relationship quality and well-being among married adults.
