The Role of Fathers in Maternal Gatekeeping: A Systematic Scoping Review
English Abstract: Background and Objective: Maternal gatekeeping refers to behaviors through which mothers regulate the extent and manner of fathers' involvement in parenting. These behaviors can be either facilitative or restrictive and are influenced by individual, relational, and social factors. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic scoping review of research on the role of fathers in maternal gatekeeping and its related factors. Methodology: This study was conducted using the scoping review method, following the framework of Arksey and O'Malley (2005) and the updates provided by Peters et al. (2020). A search for relevant studies was conducted in the Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCO databases. Studies examining the role of fathers in maternal gatekeeping were selected and analyzed without time or language restrictions. Data were extracted and categorized into conceptual definitions, dimensions of fathers' involvement, influencing factors, and outcomes of maternal gatekeeping. Findings: The results indicate that maternal gatekeeping is influenced by gender beliefs, maternal perceptions of paternal competence, couple relationship quality, social support, and cultural factors. Restrictive maternal behaviors are associated with reduced paternal involvement, increased maternal stress, and negative child outcomes. In contrast, facilitative behaviors contribute to improved co-parenting quality and enhanced parent-child interactions. Conclusion: To reduce restrictive behaviors and increase fathers' involvement, educational interventions, social support, and policies facilitating fathers' roles in the family are recommended. Future research may explore the long-term effects of maternal gatekeeping and cultural differences in this context.
