Understanding the Silent Voice of Married Women with Breast Cancer: A Phenomenological Approach
English Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the psychological, cultural, and social dimensions of the experiences of women with breast cancer and the ways they cope with the consequences of the disease. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach and a phenomenological method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with women diagnosed with breast cancer and were systematically analyzed through the stages of open, axial, and selective coding. The findings revealed that the lived experiences of women with breast cancer can be explained through three main themes: psychological–emotional, social, and cultural. Within the psychological–emotional theme, three subcategories and eleven concepts were identified; within the social theme, three subcategories and ten concepts emerged; and within the cultural theme, three subcategories and nine key concepts were extracted. The results indicate that breast cancer is not merely a physical illness for women, but rather a multidimensional phenomenon that leads to identity crises, disruptions in social roles, and the reproduction of cultural constraints. The findings also demonstrate that coping with breast cancer requires attention to psychological, cultural, and social dimensions alongside medical treatments. Therefore, it is recommended that health policymakers focus on increasing public awareness, reducing social stigma, empowering women in disease management, and establishing psychosocial support systems. Furthermore, addressing cultural taboos and revising information and communication strategies can play an effective role in improving the quality of life of these patients.
